The Tinnitus Exam was originally developed by auditory neuroscientists from the Human Neural Plasticity Laboratory at The Department of Neuroscience of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. This laboratory studies how experience with sound changes the way that the brain processes auditory stimuli (a phenomenon called “neural plasticity”). They also study how neural plasticity is involved in tinnitus, and the mechanisms underlying this disorder.
The Tinnitus Exam lets you:
- Measure the Loudness of Your Tinnitus and compare it to that of others.
- Establish the type of Your Tinnitus and determine if its type is notoriously known to be a potential symptom of a serious medical condition.
- Evaluate your Hearing Spectrum (i.e. your ability to hear different frequencies.)
- Evaluate if Hearing Loss is contributing to Your Tinnitus.
- Measure the sound frequencies that create Your Tinnitus.
- Compare the frequencies of Your Tinnitus against your ability to hear at these frequencies.
- Compare Your Tinnitus to that of patients who have participated at clinical trials.
- Obtain a sound match Your Tinnitus and download an audio file of this sound.
- Understand Your Tinnitus, its causes, and treatment options.
- Monitor and compare Your Tinnitus over time and use this to evaluate if treatments or remedies are working for you.
- Generate a comprehensive report and share it with your doctors.
The evaluation is conducted online, takes about 30 minutes, and it’s a simple five step process which generates a personalized report on the results of your test and a downloadable audio file of the sound of Your Tinnitus. Follow these links for a sample version of the report and a video tutorial showing how the test is administered.

The Tinnitus Exam is not a cure for tinnitus. Instead, it is like the thermometer you use when you have a fever -- the Tinnitus Exam will tell you how bad your tinnitus is, and, if you use it on a regular basis, you can determine whether your tinnitus is getting better or worse. If you are spending money on various tinnitus "remedies" and "cures," it makes sense to have a reliable way to measure their effectiveness.
The researchers who created the The Tinnitus Exam, as well as those of us who brought the exam to the Internet through this web site, suffer from tinnitus.
We know how difficult tinnitus can be, and we certainly wish we could offer to cure it. We do know through experience that knowledge about tinnitus in general, and about your particular condition, is helpful in learning how to manage your condition.Although all other research resources on this website are free, we must charge a fee for the tests. The Tinnitus Exam is actually 5-tests-in-1. We test for Tinnitus Loudness, Tinnitus Type, Hearing Loss, Tinnitus Spectrum, and best Tinnitus Pitch Match. The exam will also show the correlation between your Tinnitus and your Hearing Loss. Taken separately, these tests would cost you in excess of $100. But, with the efficiency of the Internet, we can make the 5-in-1 Tinnitus Test available to you for only $19.00. You can also purchase the unlimited version of the 5-in-1 Tinnitus Test for $59. The unlimited version lets you take the test as many times as you want during an entire year (ideal to track your tinnitus over time).
Your purchase helps us maintain this site, allows us to pay licensing fees to the university for their tinnitus research, lets us make grants and donations to non-for-profit tinnitus organizations, and eventually, might let us make a reasonable profit too.
With your permission, the data from your test will be anonymously shared with our neurology researchers at The Human Neural Plasticity Laboratory and used to conduct further research on tinnitus.
